Vol. 19 No. 4

Business of Seanad.

Cathaoirleach

At the request of the Minister for Agriculture, the House will be asked to vary the order in which the Bills appear on the printed Order Paper. He desires that Numbers 2, 3 and 6 be taken in that order immediately after No. 1, and that the remaining Bills for which he is responsible, Nos. 4, 5 and 7 be deferred until after the other Bills on the Order Paper are disposed of. Does the House agree to that?

Agreed.

I should like to know could we get any indication as to how long the House is going to sit, and I should like also to know if you, Sir, and the House would approve of No. 8—the Electricity Bill—being left over until to-morrow. I have been speaking to the Minister for Industry and Commerce and he would like to have that Bill left over until to-morrow.

As regards the Electricity Bill, I, unfortunately, was not able to be present at the last meeting when it was discussed; but I do feel that an important Bill of this kind, being brought in at the very tail end of the Session, is a very serious encroachment on our powers and I would ask if it would be possible to postpone this Bill until the opening of the next Session.

Cathaoirleach

That is another view of it. What does Senator Connolly think of it?

I should be very glad if I could induce the Minister for Industry and Commerce to facilitate Senator Sir John Griffith in this matter and I will put the proposal to the Minister. I do not know enough about the implications of the Bill to say if it would be practicable to postpone it, but I will have a message sent to the Minister now and see if it is possible to do so. Failing that, it may be necessary to have it finished this Session, and I rather think that it will be necessary.

Cathaoirleach

In the meantime, I think it would be well to postpone the Committee Stage of that Bill until to-morrow, if the House will agree to that course.

Agreed.

Could we know how long the House will sit this evening?

Cathaoirleach

We have a very long agenda and I think that it may be necessary to sit late to-night. If the House will agree, I suggest that we adjourn about 7 p.m. for an hour and come back and sit till 10.30; that is, if it is necessary to do so. When I say about 7 p.m., I mean that it might be necessary to finish the particular business we shall be dealing with at that time. Does the House agree to that course?

Agreed.
