Vol. 20 No. 11

Trade Union Bill, 1935—Second Stage.

Question proposed: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time."

This is a minor measure and it was introduced in the Dáil by the leader of the Labour Party. As there was no opposition, it was accepted as a Government measure to avoid the procedure of select committee. Under the Trade Union Act of 1871 a trade union is prevented from holding land exceeding one acre in extent. That provision of that Act was repealed in Great Britain some ten years ago and it is desired to have it repealed here, as certain unions are desirous of possessing—in fact, they do not actually possess—land exceeding one acre in extent. There is no objection so far as the Government are concerned to the enactment of the measure.

Question agreed to. Committee Stage ordered for Thursday, 1st August.
