This Bill, as Senators will have seen, provides for the payment of pensions of £500 a year, as from the 1st April, 1952, to the widows of two murdered Mayors of Limerick, Micheál Ó Cealleacháin and Seóirse Mac Flanncadha. The proposed pension in each case is the same as that provided some time ago by another Act for the widow of the late Terence MacSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork.
There is also provision in this Bill for the payment of a gratuity of £500 to Miss Síle MacCurtain, daughter of Tomás MacCurtain, another former Lord Mayor of Cork. It was the intention to provide in this Bill for a pension for the widow of Tomás MacCurtain, but her recent regretted death has made that impossible. Miss MacCurtain lived with her mother and cared for her during her illness, and for that reason it is proposed to pay her this gratuity which represents in amount one year's payment of the pension which would have been awarded to her mother.
