It is my sad duty to bring to the notice of the Seanad the unexpected death since our last meeting of Senator Andrew Clarkin. At that meeting the late Senator was in attendance in his usual good health. He died early this morning.
Senator Clarkin was elected to the Oireachtas Sub-Panel of the Industrial and Commercial Panel, and had been a member of this House continuously since 1944. Of a courteous and kindly disposition, he was popular with members of the Oireachtas of all Parties.
The late Senator entered wholeheartedly into all movements for the benefit of the country, whether national or local, giving of his best at all times. He joined the Sinn Féin Movement in 1911 and was a member of the Volunteers at an early age. He took part in the Rising of 1916 and was throughout his career a prominent figure in the fight for independence.
The late Senator was a Dublin man and took a leading part in furthering the development of his native city. He was for many years Alderman of the County Borough and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1951-52. He took a keen interest in the business life of his native city and worked unsparingly on behalf of its citizens. Senator Clarkin's death will be deeply mourned.
