Vol. 60 No. 15

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1 to 4, inclusive, as on the Order Paper.

In the absence of Senator Cole, I should like to make a point on the Order of Business. I understood, and I think the House understood, that when the Report Stage of the Diseases of Animals Bill was being fixed last week—there was a bit of a discussion—it was ordered for today in order to have a date fixed for taking it but that it was unlikely to be taken earlier than tomorrow morning. I understand what happened was that subsequently a difficulty which had arisen was resolved privately—someone who thought he could not be here today found he could be here and a private arrangement was made. I am not saying such a discussion should not have taken place but it leaves the rest of the House in an awkward position. Senator Cole intended to put down amendments and for all I know he is unaware that the Bill is now being taken.

My recollection is that I proposed the Report Stage be taken today and it was suggested that the mover of the amendments could not possibly be present today and the question of whether it be taken today or tomorrow was left in abeyance. When I found subsequently that Senator McDonald was able to be here today I took it for granted we could take the Bill today. I am sorry if Senators Sheldon and Cole have been put to any inconvenience.

It was rather a rash assumption that only Senator McDonald would put down amendments.

In view of the fact that the subject matter of motion No. 6 on the Order Paper is no longer sub judice, could the Leader of the House give an indication when he will be in a position to state when it can be taken?

As soon as No. 5 is completed we shall take No. 6.

When will No. 5 be completed? Sin í an cheist.
