Vol. 73 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2 and 17, the discussion on No. 17 to take place in conjunction with No. 2.

If necessary, will there be a separate decision on the motion?

May I ask when the Leader of the House proposes to take item No. 7 on the Order Paper—Companies (Amendment) Bill, 1972: First Stage— in the names of myself, Senator Robinson and Senator Jack Fitzgerald? We are very anxious that the First Stage of this Bill be taken before the Summer Recess, so that people will have an opportunity to see the Bill and discuss its contents. I think this is a very reasonable request to make, particularly as the Bill has appeared on the Order Paper for a considerable length of time. It is the only First Stage Bill on the Order Paper and I make this request in a reasonable spirit in the light of the satisfactory treatment that was accorded to Senator Robinson's Private Members' Bill recently. I see no reason why this Bill should not get its First Stage and take its place in the appropriate place in the queue of other private business. I would be very grateful if the leader of the House could give us an assurance that this would be printed before the Summer Recess.

Will he agree to take it before the end of August?

I am prepared to have it dealt with now and was prepared to have done so before now except that the Senator was not present on any Wednesday on which it came up. However, I am opposing the First Stage of the Bill.

Very well. I should like to propose taking the First Stage of the Companies (Amendment) Bill, 1972.

No. We are still on the Order of Business. The question before the House is: "That the Order of Business be varied to include No. 7." Is that agreed?

Order of Business, as amended, agreed to.
