Vol. 89 No. 15

Business of Seanad.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

When is it proposed that the House sit again?

It is proposed to adjourn sine die.

What does sine die mean? When is the House likely to sit in the autumn?

I could not give any answer at this stage. I will be interested to hear suggestions.

There should be no reason for us to await the processing of legislation from the Dáil. There are any amount of motions on the Order Paper and it would be unproductive of the Seanad's time if we did not at least consider taking some of these motions before we have to sit more or less by compulsion to process legislation.

I would like to add my voice to that of Senator Murphy. What seems to be a very long projected sine die could be translated into a sine fada at this stage. Surely with the very important motions waiting on the Order Paper this would be an ideal time to gain a double advantage. We could get them off the Order Paper, they could be discussed and all those eager Ministers and Ministers of State who will be obviously champing at the bit at the end of the summer would probably welcome the opportunity to come in and test their mettle against the Seanad and keep themselves in intellectual political training. I back with all possible force the suggestion that we should meet well before the Dáil reconvenes.

The Seanad adjourned at 3.40 p.m. sine die.
