Vol. 119 No. 5

Social Welfare Bill, 1988: Motion for Earlier Signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2 of section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concurs with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Social Welfare Bill, 1988, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him.

Question put and agreed to.

Before we move to the Adjournment of the House, as Cathaoirleach, I would like to thank all the Senators for their tremendous work and dedication during the term which is just ending. I should also like to express my deep appreciation to the reporting staff of this House and to the representatives of the media who I feel give the coverage to the affairs of this House which other Senators do not think we get. I also thank the Clerk and the Assistant Clerk of the Seanad, the staff and the ushers. I should like the Minister to convey to his Cabinet colleagues our thanks for their assistance in the terms just over. I wish everybody a happy and peaceful Easter break.

I should like to be associated with the Cathaoirleach's remarks in thanking the officials and the other Members of the House. In spite of all that has been said about this House by some political people — not too many — we have sat on two days every week since returning after Christmas. We are coming very close to the Dáil as far as sitting days are concerned. I should like to thank in particular the Whips of the other parties who have made my work as Government Whip so easy during the past term, as in previous terms. I wish everyone the compliments of the season. It is proposed at the conclusion of today's business to adjourn sine die.
