Vol. 123 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

It is proposed that we finish the Trustee Savings Banks Bill by 7 o'clock.

I note what has been suggested. Indeed, I would agree that we finish our business as quickly as possible, but there is a commitment on the record last week that we take whatever time is necessary and no more. I accept that, but it is in nobody's interest to prolong the debate any longer than is necessary. If we can, we will try to adhere to the Senator's suggestion, but we must get the business done.

I would like to say that we will take the Appropriation Bill with a limited debate. If members wish to discuss next year's Estimates they can wait until the New Year because when we return after Christmas we will debate the Appropriation Bill. We will be meeting in the second week of January to debate An Bord Glas Bill. The Committee and further Stages of the Derelict Sites Bill will be taken in the second week of January, unless something happens between now and tomorrow morning. Having said that, there is a near agreement that we do not take the Committee Stage on Tuesday. We have on Tuesday the Appropriation Bill, the Video Recording Bill and the Ombudsman issue, which was in the Dáil today. They will be discussed on Tuesday.

On the question of the reappointment of the Ombudsman, I presume that that is a debate, not just a motion which goes through on the nod. I presume time will be allocated for that. We do not want much time, just a fixed amount of time.

A set time will be allocated. It will be a limited debate. It will not go through on the nod.

Restrict the contributions to ten minutes or so to ensure that Senators get a chance to put their views on the record.
