Vol. 174 No. 4

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Higgins that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

In view of the recent massive mountain landslide at Pullathomas/Glendad, County Mayo, which has led to the destruction of homes and property as well as infrastructure and the evacuation of families from their homes, the need for the Office of Public Works to put in place a compensation package for the families affected and the necessary finance for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

I have also received notice from Senator Henry of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to publish the interdepartmental report on disabled drivers and disabled passengers (tax concessions) (regulations) scheme, which was commissioned five years ago.

I have also received notice from Senator Tuffy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Defence to give the up to date position regarding plans for the military barracks at Castlebar, County Mayo, and the reason the usage of the barracks appears to be substantially less this year than in previous years.

I have also received notice from Senator Bannon of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism to make a statement in relation to investment in the arts, following cutbacks which amounted to €4 million overall in the last budget, in light of the continuing negative impact of such cuts on performing companies and the communities they serve.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Meara of the following matter:

The urgent need for the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to ensure that a rehabilitation plan for old mine sites at Silvermines, County Tipperary, is agreed and implemented as soon as possible.

I have also received notice from Senator Morrissey of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to report on the imminent closure of the Treasure Tots nursery operated by the child care community business in Le Fanu House, Ballyfermot, due to the inordinate delay in processing its grant application lodged in November 2002.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment and I have selected the matters raised by Senators Higgins, Henry and Tuffy to be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Bannon, O'Meara and Morrissey may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
