Vol. 191 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Ned O'Sullivan that on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to outline the reason he has issued a directive to Mayo County Council to amend its county development plan and if he is aware of the dissatisfaction of members of Mayo County Council to his directive.

I have also received notice from Senator Paul Bradford of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to assist local authorities such as Cork County Council and Mallow Town Council in responding to the problems caused by excessive lead in public water supplies.

I have also received notice from Senator Denis O'Donovan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to support the re-introduction of the Cork-Swansea ferry for the 2009 season in view of the huge financial loss its absence has to the Cork-Kerry region.

I have also received notice from Senator Frances Fitzgerald of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to prioritise the extension and refurbishment of St. Brigid's national school, Palmerstown, Dublin 20 in light of the very poor existing conditions for students and staff and the lengthy amount of time which the school has waited for such refurbishment and to provide details of when he expects such work to commence.

I have also received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to clarify when it is planned to commence the implementation of the national broadband scheme and the length of time it will take to have the service made available to areas of the country that do not currently have broadband provision including parts of County Donegal.

I have also received notice from Senator Jerry Buttimer of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to publish the report of the Cork Docklands Forum on the Cork Docklands.

I have also received notice from Senator Shane Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to expand educational development to increase the numbers of non-denominational schools in Ireland, thus avoiding the reinforcing of sectarian divides by separating children according to denominations during their core school hours.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators O'Sullivan, Bradford and O'Donovan and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The remaining Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
