EU Council Decisions: Motion.

I move:

That the proposal that Seanad Éireann approves the exercise by the State of the option or discretion provided by Article 1.11 of the Treaty of Amsterdam to take part in the adoption of the following proposed measures:

(i) a proposal for a Council Framework Decision on the recognition and supervision of suspended sentences, alternative sanctions and conditional sentences, a copy of which proposed measure was laid before Seanad Éireann on 27 February 2007;

(ii) a proposal for the adoption by the European Union of the Agreement on Extradition between the European Union and the United States of America, done at Washington on 25 June 2003 and the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance between the European Union and the United States of America, done at Washington on 25 June 2003, copies of which agreements were laid before Seanad Éireann on 24 April 2008; and

(iii) a proposal for a Council Decision establishing a European Police Office (EUROPOL), a copy of which proposed measure was laid before Seanad Éireann on 18 July 2008,

be referred to the Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights in accordance with paragraph (1) (Seanad) of the Orders of Reference of that committee which, not later than 14 October 2008, shall send a message to the Seanad in the manner prescribed in Standing Order 72, and Standing Order 74(2) shall accordingly apply.
