Vol. 226 No. 9

Business of Seanad

I have received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to refrain from the proposed abolition of town councils, particularly effective and successful town councils such as Letterkenny in County Donegal.

I have also received notice from Senator John Whelan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to address the understandable anxiety of workers from the ESB group of unions in relation to the €1.7 billion shortfall in the highly profitable semi-State company's pension fund and the grave problems this poses for ESB workers and their families in terms of pension security and pension entitlements in their retirement.

I have also received notice from Senator Colm Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to clarify why the degree of MSc dietetics from a university in Northern Ireland is not automatically recognised by the Department of Health and why it is taking up to six months to process an application for validation.

I have also received notice from Senator Deirdre Clune of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice and Equality to outline the steps he will take to ensure personal data are afforded a greater level of security on the Internet.

I have also received notice from Senator Lorraine Higgins of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation to set up a task force to enlist the support of all enterprise agencies to provide an employment focus in Loughrea, County Galway, in view of the loss of jobs recently in the area.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Brian Ó Domhnaill, John Whelan, Colm Burke and Deirdre Clune and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senator Lorraine Higgins may give notice on another day of the matter she wishes to raise.
