SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENTERPRISE AND SMALL BUSINESS díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 5 Apr 2000

Vol. 3 No. 15

Business of Select Committee.

Clerk to the Committee

The first item on the agenda is the election of a temporary chairman. I ask for nominations.

I propose Deputy Conor Lenihan as temporary chairman.

I second that.

Deputy C. Lenihan took the Chair.

I apologise on behalf of my party colleague. I would like to think I was such a good Whip that I knew his whereabouts. I do not suppose he is on a flotel or anything like that.

We will resume our consideration of the Copyright and Related Rights Bill. This is our tenth meeting on the Bill. As agreed, I propose we meet from now until 6 p.m. I do not know if we can alter that to add another 15 minutes but if Deputies do not wish to do so, we will not. I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Tom Kitt, and the officials from his Department.

It will not be possible for us to meet next week on this Bill due to other business, including other Bills on Committee Stage. However, the full day Tuesday, 18 April, will be available to conclude our work on this Bill, if agreeable. I understand the Minister of State will be able to attend on that date and I would welcome members' views on that.

I made it clear that Fine Gael front bench meetings are held on Tuesdays from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. As my colleague Deputy Stanton will not be available on that day, I suggest we meet from 2 p.m. onwards at the earliest.

My apologies for suggesting that. Is that acceptable to Deputy Rabbitte, that is, Tuesday, 18 April from 2 p.m.?

I am normally on front bench duty on Tuesdays but I will make an exception if it means we will finish the Bill.

Will we meet from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and then break for the Order of Business at 4.15 p.m. and come back after that.

I am open to persuasion on whether we will need to resume.

Will we resume after the Order of Business at about 5 p.m.? Is that acceptable?

One is constantly missing the Order of Business as a result of this. We will meet from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

If we want to come back, we can come back at 5 p.m.

If we have to reconvene, then we will have to do so.

We can meet from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
