Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Bill, 1996: Committee Stage.

The purpose of this meeting is to commence Committee Stage of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Bill, 1996. I welcome the Minister, Deputy Owen, and her officials, Mr. Ken O'Leary. Mr. Martin Power and Ms Linda O'Shea Farren. This Bill is welcomed by all sides of the House as a further measure in the fight against drugs and drug trafficking. That subject. is of particular concern to this select committee which has demonstrated its commitment to and interest in this issue by setting up a subcommittee on the drugs problem. The subcommittee, which is chaired by Deputy O'Donoghue, is at present hearing evidence from interested parties and organisations. I look forward to an interesting, informative and constructive debate on the amendments to the Bill. I am confident our deliberations will result in improved legislation.

I propose that we should break for lunch at 1.30 p.m. as Deputy O'Donnell and other Members have indicated their intention to attend an important meeting of the Select Committee on Social Affairs which should be concluded by 3 o'clock.
