Special Committee Pigs and Bacon Bill, 1934 díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 10 Apr 1935

SECTION 43.

Minister for Agriculture

I beg to move amendment No. 28 :—

At the end of the section to insert a new sub-section as follows :—

(2) Before making on or after the date of the establishment of the Bacon Marketing Board regulations under the immediately preceding sub-section in relation to the matters mentioned in paragraph (a) of the said sub-section, the Minister shall consult the Bacon Marketing Board.

A number of those sections were drafted and afterwards submitted to the interests concerned for their comments. This is one case where we tried to meet the wishes of the bacon trade. We saw a number of curers and they appointed a sub-committee to interview the Department, when the Bill was first circulated. This is one point on which we thought we should meet them. They held, and I think properly held, too, that we ought not to make regulations on the method of curing or otherwise of the carcases or parts of carcases without first consulting them. They were afraid we might unwittingly make some regulation that would practically knock a man out of business. We consented to consult them first before making regulations with regard to curing.

That is reasonable.

Amendment agreed to.
Section 43, as amended, and Section 44 agreed to.
