168 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the reason new town councils for Ballincollig and Carrigaline cannot be established in time for local government elections in 2004. [2615/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe development of a proposal for the establishment of a new town council is a matter for the local community in the first instance and thereafter a decision on whether to proceed further with such a proposal is a reserved function of the relevant county council, following a public consultation process. Part 17 of the Local Government Act 2001 allows for the first elections to such town councils to proceed independently of the normal local election cycle. I hope to be in a position to commence these and other relevant provisions of the Act during the course of the year.
