Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

480 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he will consider the introduction of a system similar to that for TV licences, whereby people could purchase stamps for car tax at post offices in view of the recent increases in car tax and the difficulties which these impose on low income drivers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Given that the typical annual cost of motor taxation is significantly greater than the annual cost of a TV licence and that this tax represents but one of a number of required fixed payments, for example, insurance, associated with motoring, there is no proposal to introduce a stamp savings scheme similar to that in operation for TV licences. It is open to motorists to pay motor tax for periods of three or six months, as well as for a full year.
