278 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position with regard to the participation of deaf people on juries; if signers will be provided; and the progress his Department has made in addressing this issue. [5183/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraAs the Deputy may be aware, the Juries Act 1976 precludes deaf people, and other categories of persons, from serving on a jury. The question of amending this provision has been raised with me and, in this regard, I have stated that any future review of the legislation in question will encompass the provisions concerning the categories of persons deemed ineligible and excusable as of right from serving on juries.
