The right to vote at local elections is provided for in section 24 of the Local Government Act 2001. It states:
Every person whose name is on the register of local government electors for a local electoral area is entitled to vote at a local election poll in that area. A person is entitled to be registered as a local government elector if he or she has reached the age of 18 years and is ordinarily resident in the local government area.

Ceist:400 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if Garda issued temporary registration cards are an acceptable form of identification for the purpose of voting at the local elections in 2004; if polling clerks and presiding officers have been informed of this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraAt present the registration card referred to is not among the identification documents specified for the purposes of voting. However, my Department will consult the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform on the issue.
