Ceisteanna (277)

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

457 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the substantial increase in the cost of workshops organised for children with dyslexia; if he will consider increasing the grant to the Dyslexia Association in order to prevent parents from being forced to give up these workshops due to excessive cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has received representations from certain branches of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland expressing concern at the escalating costs of running workshops.

The position is that annual funding of €63,500 has been provided by my Department to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland since 1999. This funding has helped the association to operate an information service for members and the public. In addition, it has assisted in meeting the costs associated with the attendance of some children from disadvantaged backgrounds at workshops and programmes organised by the association. No decision on the provision of further funding has as yet been taken.
