Ceisteanna (123)

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

124 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science when she proposes to grant aid the building of two classrooms at a school (details supplied) in County Galway; if her attention has been drawn to the gross overcrowding at the school and to the fact that the school authorities do not want another prefab; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Grant aid was approved by my Department in July 2003 towards the purchase of one prefab for the school to which the Deputy refers to meet its accommodation needs. The school authorities subsequently decided to utilise the grant to construct a permanent classroom. This provision will adequately meet the school's current accommodation requirements.

The school's overall accommodation needs will be considered in the context of a review of all projects which did not proceed to construction as part of the 2004 school building programme with a view to including them as part of a multi-annual programme from 2005. I expect to provide details of this multi-annual programme before the end of the current year.
