40 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the extent to which local authorities have not drawn down their allocated funding from the local government fund; the reason the funding has not been drawn down; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe local government fund is used primarily to fund general purpose grants and non-national road grants to local authorities. All the general purpose grants due to local authorities for 2004 — namely a total of €751,545,894 — have been paid in full.
In 2004, the total allocation for non-national roads from the local government fund is €428 million. Grant claims are submitted each month by local authorities on the basis of expenditure incurred by them. A sum of €246,877,240 has been paid to date from the fund in respect of non-national roads and I expect that the balance of €181,122,760 will be paid by the end of the year.
