Joan Burton

Ceist:

130 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the steps his Department will take in view of the consensus between the European Commission, Council and Parliament on the Services Directive in order to ensure that the provisions of the draft directive are transposed into law here with the minimum delay; the timetable for the enactment of such legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The European Commission's amended proposal was published on 4th April following the European Parliament's first vote on the proposal on the 16th February 2006. The amended proposal is currently being examined in the Council Working Group and COREPER. The Austrian Presidency hopes to have political agreement on the proposal for the Competitiveness Council on 29th and 30th May 2006, although it remains to be seen if this ambitious target can be met.

If and when the draft Services Directive is adopted it is the intention that it will be transposed into Irish law within the time-frame that will be specified within the Directive, which is expected to be in the order of two years from adoption.
