196 Deputy Terence Flanagan asked the Minister for Health if he will deal with the following matter (details supplied) regarding the long-term illness scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13370/12]
Amharc ar fhreagraPrescription charges do not apply to items supplied to patients under the Long Term Illness Scheme. Under the scheme, the HSE provides patients with medicines and appliances for the treatment of the prescribed disease or disability. The conditions covered are: mental handicap, mental illness (under 16 years only), phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, haemophilia, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophies, parkinsonism and acute leukaemia. Medical card holders are required to pay a 50c charge for medicines and other prescription items supplied to them by community pharmacists, subject to a cap of €10 per month for each person or family.
