299 Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the date on which the youth employment levy was introduced; the rate at which the levy was set; the income generated for the Exchequer per annum when in place; the details of when the levy was abolished; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe Youth Employment Levy was introduced in 1981 and was subsequently amended in 1989 and re-named the Employment and Training Levy. The Employment and Training Levy was set at 1% of an individual's total income with some exceptions. The levy was abolished with effect from 6 April, 1999.
Only relatively small residual amounts of money under the Levy continue to be collected by the Revenue Commissioners. These relate to historical payments of taxes that would have had a component element attributable to the Levy, had the taxes been paid at the time.
These residual amounts are paid over to my Department by Revenue on a monthly basis and in turn passed on to Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (previously, Department of Finance).
The total cumulative income generated from this levy, to the end of December 2011, was €2,890,713,003 of which €310,750 was received in the 2011 calendar year.
