* Increase due to temporary staff required for EU Presidency and leaving July 2013.

Notes:

1. The increase in the number of contract staff employed by the Department of the Taoiseach in 2012 and 2013 is explained by the recruitment of temporary staff to assist with EU Presidency planning and preparation functions in keeping with precedents set by previous EU Presidencies. These functions were shared between the Department of the Taoiseach and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade following the transfer of functions between the two Departments that took place after the last general election.

2. Figures for contract staff employed by the Department of the Taoiseach include staff appointed by the Taoiseach whose contracts are co-terminus with his term of office as Taoiseach.

3. The staff numbers shown for Principal Officer, Assistant Principal Officer and Administrative Officer for 2012 and 2013 include Counsellors, First Secretaries and Third Secretaries respectively who were seconded to the Department of the Taoiseach from the Department of Foreign Affairs following the transfer of EU functions between the two Departments after the last general election.
