705. Deputy Michelle Mulherin asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the current legal position of sulkie racing on public highways; if a ban on this activity is proposed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31608/13]
Amharc ar fhreagraThere are no specific legal provisions relating to the operation of sulkies on public roads. Under current road traffic legislation, I, as Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, have power to make general regulations for the control of traffic, including the parking of vehicles in public places and, while the Gardaí have been successful in bringing prosecutions for the racing of sulkies, I believe that the law in this area requires further examination. I have asked my Department, in consultation with the Gardaí, to review the current legislation governing the use of animals on public roads, to determine if tighter controls are necessary.
