Medical Card Applications

The Health Service Executive has been asked to examine this matter and to reply to the Deputy as soon as possible.

The Health Service Executive operates the General Medical Services scheme, which includes medical cards and GP visit cards, under the Health Act 1970, as amended. It has established a dedicated contact service for members of the Oireachtas specifically for queries relating to medical cards and GP visit cards, which the Deputy may wish to use for an earlier response. Contact information has issued to Oireachtas members.

If the Deputy has not received a reply from the HSE within 15 working days, please contact my Private Office who will follow up the matter with them.

The HSE provides orthodontic treatment to patients based on their level of clinical need. An individual's access to orthodontic treatment is determined against a set of clinical guidelines and priority is given to patients with greatest needs. The HSE has been asked to examine the specific query raised by the Deputy and to reply to him as soon as possible. Deputy Michael Lowry asked the Minister for Health if he will take steps to ensure that funding is put in place to provide home care package support in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Offaly; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this person is rightfully entitled to these supports, which have been approved, but is being deprived of them; if his attention has been further drawn to the impact this is having on the person's family, which is attempting to fill the breach left by the Health Service Executive, which has a responsibility towards the care of the elderly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Deputy Michael Lowry asked the Minister for Health if he will sanction additional funding to provide for support under the home care package for persons in the midlands area; if his attention has been drawn to seriously ill and infirm persons in this region who are being left without support which has been approved and which has been deemed necessary in view of the severity of the medical conditions involved, leaving these individuals in a very vulnerable position and placing huge amounts of pressure on their families; his views on whether this is fair; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
