576. Deputy Charlie McConalogue asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the total number of dairy farmers participating and not participating respectively, in the sustainable dairy assurance scheme per county, in tabular form; the expected duration of the scheme; the consequence to farmers who do not join the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The following table outlines the details of the total number of farmers that have applied to join the SDAS and the total that are currently certified members of the SDAS on a per county basis. The scheme is administered by Bord Bia and their aim is to have every dairy farmer certified under the scheme in the coming months.

This is a voluntary scheme and as such there are no direct consequences for not joining. However it should be noted that certification under the scheme also meets the EU regulatory requirements in respect of hygiene on the farm. Non participants must have these requirements separately verified by their Milk Purchaser
