Deputy Peter Burke asked the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the number of persons at assistant principal level under the aegis of her Department due to retire in the next six months due to age in counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Clare; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraI am advised there is one individual under the aegis of Department, at Assistant Principal level, due to retire in the next six months, due to age, in counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon or Clare. It should be noted that this individual will be eligible to apply for retention under circular 21/2017 which allows for retention, in certain cases, beyond the Compulsory Retirement Age of 65 years until reaching the age of eligibility for the Contributory State Pension.
My Department adheres to arrangements as set out in Department of Public Expenditure and Reform Circular 10/2012 with respect to retirements. It should be noted that in accordance with this circular Civil Servants who joined prior to 1 April 2004 are required, under current legislation, to retire at 65. Civil Servants who joined the Civil Service on or after 1 April 2004 and are a “new entrant” as defined in section 2 of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004, are not required to retire at 65 as the maximum retirement age was removed under this Act. Civil Servants who joined on or after 1 January 2013 and are members of the new Single Public Service Pension Scheme have a maximum retirement age of 70.
