Deputy Clare Daly asked the Minister for Health his plans to regulate chiropractors under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 with a view to permitting the listing of chiropractors as qualified professionals under the European Union (Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Dangers arising from Medical Exposure to Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2018. Amharc ar fhreagraThere are no plans at present to designate Chiropractors for regulation under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act, 2005. The priority is to bring to completion, possibly by 2019, the regulation of the fourteen professions currently designated under the Act, increasing to sixteen professions with the designation of Counsellors and Psychotherapists in the coming weeks. Chiropractors are one of a growing number of professions seeking to be designated for regulation by CORU.
Once all designated professions are regulated, a comprehensive risk assessment will be undertaken to bring forward recommendations to the Minister on the next phase of professions to be regulated and the various regulatory options for consideration based on the need for proportionate regulation and the degree of regulatory force to be applied relative to the degree of risk involved.
The statutory instrument transposing the Basic Safety Standards Directive (BSSD) will designate those who may refer for radiological tests, those who may carry them out and other functions and in this regard I propose to designate nurses, doctors, dentists and radiographers as appropriate.
