Deputy Catherine Martin asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport when a decision will be provided on the funding status of phase 4 of the Royal Canal greenway; the requirements that need to be undertaken in order for this section to proceed to planning; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraAs the Deputy is aware, as Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public and sustainable transport. In Budget 2018 I have secured over €110 million which is being allocated to develop cycling and walking infrastructure in the Greater Dublin Area, and in the cities of Galway, Limerick, Cork and Waterford over the period 2018-2021. This programme will provide safe alternative active travel routes to help alleviate congestion by providing viable alternatives and connectivity with existing public transport infrastructure.
I am not, however, involved in the day-to-day delivery of walking and cycling infrastructure. This falls to the National Transport Authority who have advised that works under phase 4 of the Royal Canal Greenway project are included in this year’s programme of works.
