Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

552. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice and Equality his views on the reported serious deficiency in the numbers of trained forensic collision investigators in An Garda Síochána; the actual numbers of forensic collision investigators for each year since 2012; the steps he is taking to bring this critical section of An Garda Síochána up to full operational strength; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy will appreciate, it is the Garda Commissioner who is responsible for the distribution of resources, including personnel, among the various Garda Divisions and I, as Minister, have no direct role in the matter. Garda management keeps this distribution of resources under continual review in the context of crime trends and policing priorities so as to ensure that the optimum use is made of these resources.

I have requested the specific information sought by the Deputy from the Commissioner and I will write to him directly on receipt of same.
