54. Deputy Michael McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the number of applications sought for a refund of income tax by taxpayers by virtue of claiming tax relief on certain expenditures, claiming additional tax credits or as a result of a P35 annual statement request for each year since 2010; the amount refunded to income taxpayers each year as a result, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am advised by Revenue that the number of PAYE taxpayers who received tax refunds following claims or review requests, and the total amounts refunded for the years 2010 to 2018, are set out in the table below.

Revenue has also advised me that the data in respect of the years 2015 to 2018 are subject to change as further review requests for those years are still possible. Revenue also confirmed that some 200,000 additional taxpayers also received balancing statements (P21) during the years in question but were not due a refund.
