239. Deputy Brendan Howlin asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if the OPW will undertake to fund urgent restoration work required at Terreraght Castle, a Norman tower house, in New Ross, County Wexford; if the attention of the OPW has been drawn to the condition of this historic monument which in its present condition has necessitated the closure of a local important link road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Office of Public Works is funded to protect designated National Monuments which are defined in legislation. Along with many other similar structures, Terreraght Castle is not a designated National Monument and therefore OPW has no responsibility or funding to undertake any works required at it.
