Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government further to Parliamentary Question No. 1193 of 3 June 2020, if the contracts of fire fighters who wish to remain in work until 60 years of age will be extended pending the implementation of the Workplace Relations Commission recommendation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraAs previously advised in response to Parliamentary Question No. 1193 of 3 June 2020, I have no objection, in principle, to the recommendation of the Workplace Relations Commission to increase the retirement age of retained firefighters from 58 to 60 years of age. However, such an increase would require, inter alia, the amendment of primary legislation, namely, the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and Other Provisions) Act 2012, which is the responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform. Accordingly, it is currently not possible to extend, on an ad hoc basis, the employment of retained firefighters beyond 58 years of age.
