Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the plans in place by the OPW to deal with the recurring flooding problem in Clifden, County Galway; when it is expected that work will be carried out on the ground to reduce the impact of future flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraA potential flood relief scheme was recommended for Clifden as part of the National Flood Risk Management Plans, published in 2018, which identified 118 new projects nationwide to be progressed under the National Development Plan 2018 – 2027. Following this proposal, the Office of Public Works confirmed to Galway County Council that it would fund the costs of developing and implementing a scheme for the town. The council recently confirmed that it intends to go to tender shortly for consultants to further develop the scheme for the town, and the data collected from the recent flood event will inform the design of that scheme. While it is not possible to confirm at this stage when flood relief works will be carried out, both the Council and OPW are committed to ensuring that progress will be made as quickly as possible in order to prevent a similar flooding event occurring again.
