Brendan Griffin

Ceist:

460. Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if the OPW plans to carry out dredging works and sluice gate maintenance on the rivers Brick and Shanow in County Kerry as the rivers are flooding a considerable amount of agricultural land in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Office of Public Works (OPW) is responsible for the maintenance of Arterial Drainage Schemes and Catchment Drainage Schemes designated under the Arterial Drainage Acts of 1945 and 1995. The OPW is responsible for the Feale Catchment Drainage Scheme which extends as far as Shanow Bridge on the regional road R557. The OPW does not have responsibility for maintenance of the channel beyond this point.

The OPW has carried out a significant amount of works on the River Brick and the River Shanow recently including dredging in front of sluices and bank protection works.

Further maintenance works are planned and will recommence as soon as environmental conditions allow.
