135. Deputy Catherine Connolly asked the Minister for Transport if mechanisms have been put in place to ensure continuity of the provisions of the sixth motor insurance Directive 2009/103/EC allowing persons resident here who are injured in road traffic accidents which occur in Northern Ireland to bring legal proceedings in this jurisdiction; if so, the details of those mechanisms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the UK, including Northern Ireland, have now left the EU, the provisions of the sixth Motor Insurance Directive no longer apply to them.  Persons injured in a motor accident in third countries who wish to bring legal proceedings must do so in the country where the incident took place.  This is one of the unavoidable consequences of the UK decision to leave the EU.
