90. Deputy Patricia Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications when legislation will be introduced to enable a deposit return scheme for cans and bottles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11898/21]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe roadmap for the introduction of a deposit and return scheme (DRS) for plastic bottles and aluminium cans in 2022 is outlined in the Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy launched last September. The legislative basis for the delivery of a DRS will be provided through the transposition of Directive (EU) 2019/904 of the European Parliament on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment- commonly referred to as the Single Use Plastics Directive. This Directive must be transposed by 3 July 2021.
A public consultation focusing on the preferred DRS model and the draft legislative framework will be launched before the end of Q1 2021.
