565. Deputy Claire Kerrane asked the Minister for Social Protection if flexibility is allowed regarding scholarships awarded to students in receipt of the disability allowance as in the case of a person (detail supplied); the details of the supports available to students with disabilities to ensure their receipt of social protection payments is not penalised as a result of being awarded funding for research and study-related costs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I thank the Deputy for raising this matter.

I spoke directly to the person referred to last week as soon as her case was brought to my attention.

I have asked my officials to bring forward the necessary legislative changes required to remedy this situation as a matter of urgency and, once drafted, I intend to sign regulations to this effect in the coming days.
