The table below provides information on the total Departmental funding approved for each cross-border project. In the case of multi-annual projects, approvals are for the duration of the project, and drawdowns arise at intervals aligned with expenditure. Projects may receive funding from other sources, and the information in the table refers specifically to the amount approved for this Department (other than the projects funded via Shared Island).

Ulster Canal

Restoration of the Ulster Canal between Clones and Clonfad Funding to complete Phase 2 of the restoration of the Ulster Canal with an allocation of €6m from the Shared Island Fund and a further €1m from the Fund for development work on Phase 3 of the project has been allocated for 2022.

‘Changing Spatial Relationships between Home and Workplace’ - research project (2021-23)

Led by the International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD) at Maynooth University and supported in part by the Department. It is examining how new remote work patterns sparked by the pandemic will change home life, local business and community environments.

The All Island Local Authority Forum

The All Island Local Authority Forum which was established in 2002 is a strategic partnership comprising of 5 Chief Executives from the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, NI (SOLACE) and 5 Chief Executives from the County and City Management Association (CCMA). The Forum provides opportunities for cross border co-operation on a range of issues of mutual interest to both administrations by facilitating the collaboration of best practice as well as a sharing of learning and information.

INTERREG

The Department is funding 9 cross border water projects through the INTERREG VA Programme 2014-2020, a €283m EU co-funded cross-border initiative. The 9 projects are:

- Cooperation Across Borders for Biodiversity (CABB)

- Collaborative Oceanography and Monitoring for Protected Areas and Species (COMPASS)

- System for Bathing Water quality Modelling (SWIM)

- Marine Protected Area Management and Monitoring (MarPAMM)

- Shared Waters Enhancement and Loughs Legacy (SWELL)

In addition to the projects and initiatives listed in the table, one of the six all-Ireland North/South implementation bodies, Waterways Ireland, is under the aegis of my Department. It is responsible for the management, maintenance, development and restoration of inland navigable waterways, mainly for recreational purposes. Funding of €28,918,000 was provided in 2021, an increase of just over €3 million on the 2020 allocation.
