The Department of Health is fully committed to promoting and supporting breastfeeding. We all know how important it is that our children get the best nutritious start in life and this is something all Government partners have prioritised in the Programme for Government.

Following discussion at the Obesity Policy Implementation Oversight Group on promoting breastfeeding in 2021, an analysis of the supports required to implement Breastfeeding in Ireland- A five-year Strategic Action Plan was carried out. A key action identified in the Action Plan is the appointment of dedicated full- time Lactation Consultants.

Last year the Department, through Healthy Ireland, made a significant investment by providing recurring annual funding of €1.58m euros for an additional 24 Lactation Consultants. This provides for the full complement of Lactation Consultants as set out in the Action Plan for hospital and community settings. These posts will help ensure timely skilled assistance for mothers who wish to breastfeed and will also support enhanced training, skills and knowledge to frontline staff.

By providing funding for the 24 Lactation Consultants, this fulfilled the action discussed at the Obesity Policy Implementation Oversight Group.
