Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill 2024 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed)

Dáil Éireann - 23 October 2024

Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill 2024 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed)

Question put: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time."

Fóram: Dáil Éireann

Tellers: Tá, Deputies Hildegarde Naughton and Cormac Devlin; Níl, Deputies Cian O'Callaghan and Denise Mitchell.

Explanations under Standing Order 157(3) as received from Members:Deputy Barry voted against the Bill as, while there's an expansion of voters beyond just two institutions which will see more people being eligible to vote, the Bill is narrowly based on reform of just six seats; the Bill does not implement universal franchise for the Seanad election; the vast majority of people will still have no vote in the Seanad; elections to the Seanad will remain elitist, undemocratic and archaic; while on occasion there can be workers' representatives and progressive candidates elected to the Seanad who can use the position as an important platform, Solidarity stands for the abolition of the Seanad as it is a House that is structured to be a constitutional block and frustration of popular elections; this Bill will not change the nature of the Seanad.
