Europe Day marked by Houses of the Oireachtas

The Houses of the Oireachtas marked Europe Day today. The European Union flag was raised outside Leinster House this morning, followed by a special meeting of five joint Committees in the Seanad Chamber.

The Committees heard from representatives of universities North and South of the Border and Teagasc. They spoke on reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP), security and defence, migration, climate action and sustainable development.

The following Joint Committees participated in the special sitting:

  • European Union Affairs
  • Justice and Equality
  • Foreign Affairs and Trade and Defence
  • Climate Action
  • Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May, the anniversary of the Schuman declaration of 1950. In the declaration, Robert Schuman set out his idea for political co-operation in Europe as a means of safeguarding world peace.
