The Houses of the Oireachtas Library and Archives has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) this month, becoming the coalition’s newest associate member.

The Oireachtas Library has been serving parliamentarians since 1924 by delivering library and information services that support the work of both Houses of the Oireachtas, Committees and individual Members. The Archive is currently being established to centralise and safeguard the records and archives of the Oireachtas.

“As members of the DPC, we are looking forward to accessing the expertise of a community of digital preservation practitioners,” says Mairéad Treanor, Head of Library for the Houses of the Oireachtas. “And as we work toward meeting our objective of a ‘Digital Parliament’ we are keen to learn from the experiences of the DPC community through training and other events.”

Chair of the DPC, Juan Bicarregui was delighted to welcome Mairéad and colleagues saying: “We look forward to working alongside the Oireachtas Library and Archives to build the capability necessary to manage important digital materials and historic records far into the future, as they bring their own valuable perspectives to the expertise of the Coalition and its members.”

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
