Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine to discuss cost and supply of fertiliser in the European Union with officials from European Commission

19 Ean 2022, 11:35

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet this evening with officials from the European Commission to discuss the cost and supply of fertiliser in the European Union.

The meeting at 5.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from Fabien Santini, Deputy Head of Unit, Unit G1 - Governance of the agri-food markets, European Commission, and officials from DG Agriculture and Rural Development.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Jackie Cahill said: “The huge increases in the cost of fertiliser in the last six months is a very worrying development for the agri-industry in our country. Cost increases in the region of 250 per cent are unprecedented for raw materials in any industry. There are also concerns about the availability of the product for the coming season.

“The Committee welcomes the opportunity to discuss with the European Commission the issues around the cost and availability of fertiliser product in the EU. We look forward to hearing the steps the Commission is taking to bring the cost down to more normal, affordable levels, and to assure availability of supply for farmers and the agri-industry in Ireland.”

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
