Committee of Public Accounts to examine of Central Government Funding of Local Authorities with Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

22 Meith 2022, 16:15

The Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 23 June, to examine Chapter 3 of the C&AG 2020 Report – Central government funding of local authorities with officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, led by the Secretary General, Graham Doyle.

The meeting at 9.30am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be joined by the Comptroller and Auditor General, Mr Seamus McCarthy.

During the afternoon session, beginning at 1.30pm, the Committee will consider correspondence and other business of the Committee.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Stanley said: “The Committee agreed earlier this year to hold an engagement with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to examine the arrangements in place for accountability and oversight of central government funds that go to the local government sector. While the Committee does not examine the spending of individual local authorities, it does have a role in ensuring that the Department has appropriate levels of oversight of the central government funds that local government receives.

“Areas the Committee wishes to examine include the Governance Framework for the local government sector, local authority audit matters including the role of the Local Government Audit Service, and the National Oversight and Audit Commission, and local government shared services. The Committee looks forward to discussing these and related matters with the Secretary General and his colleagues.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

PAC is a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money. Further information on the role and remit of the Committee can be found here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
