28 Meith 2022, 16:19

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday June 29th for engagement with the Embassy of the Czech Republic on their priorities for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Czech Republic will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1st 2022.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 9:30-12:30.

Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Ireland, Filip Vurm will address the meeting.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “We welcome the opportunity to meet with a representative from the Embassy of the Czech Republic to discuss their priorities, goals and ambitions as it embarks on its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.”

“The Czech Republic has chosen ‘Europe as a Task; rethink, rebuild, repower’ as its slogan for its Presidency. It is meant to symbolise the new chapter in Europe's history opened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

“The is a timely opportunity to engage with Mr Vurm as the war in Ukraine has passed the four month mark with no end in sight. It is incumbent on all EU member states to whelp tackle the challenges posed by the war and other challenges facing the Bloc. We look forward to discussing the priorities of the Presidency, which also include Ukraine’s place in Europe and the EU, energy security, defence policy and maintaining and developing democratic values and the rule of law in the EU.”
